A Place Worth Drawing
Gut Bridge began as a graphite study of a familiar place from Codroy Valley. The structure, the lines of the deck, and the view along the bridge gave me a subject built around perspective, texture, and contrast.
The Original on Paper
I used graphite pencils ranging from 7H to 10B on 200gsm paper. The drawing took about six hours to complete. The repeating structure and dark supports sit against lighter surroundings, giving the piece its depth.
From Drawing to Light
Later, I used the finished artwork as the source for a 3D printed lithophane. A lithophane uses variations in thickness to let different amounts of light through. Here, that gives the same bridge another way to be seen when light passes through the print.
One Image, Two Forms
The graphite drawing and the lithophane each stand on their own. Together, they show a crossover I enjoy exploring: taking something made by hand and giving it a new physical form through printing.
